About
Fleet Moss is one of the most striking viewpoints in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Renowned for its steep elevation, it makes for a challenging cycling climb with stunning panoramic views from the top. As the highest paved road in Yorkshire, it offers a unique vantage point over the surrounding moorland and valleys, making it a favourite among cyclists and sightseers.
An informal parking area provides a chance to pause and take in the sweeping views down Sleddale towards Gayle and Wensleydale. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy the changing light and weather across the landscape.
Along Oughtershaw Road towards Langstrothdale, there are a few informal pull-in areas that may offer additional viewing opportunities. However, availability and suitability can vary.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is not responsible for and does not maintain these areas.
Accessibility
It is a challenging climb for cyclists and wheelchair users, with sections averaging 8-10% and a maximum gradient of 20%. The descent from Fleet Moss is also steep, requiring caution.
Getting there
From the market town of Hawes, turn towards Gayle and Kettlewell and drive up the steep Beggarmans Road to the viewing point.
Facilities
Toilets

Purchase RADAR keys from the Disability Rights UK website.
Changing Places toilet
There is also a Changing Places toilet at the Dales Countryside Museum.
The Changing Places toilet is located at the rear of the museum, which you can reach via the accessible ramp. Information Advisors will be happy to guide you when you arrive at our main reception area.
Please note that the facilities at Dales Countryside Museum are subject to museum opening hours.
A Changing Places toilet is more than a standard disabled toilet. It contains extra equipment and space to allow people with profound learning disabilities, as well as people with physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis, to use the toilet safely and comfortably.
If you need to report any problems or issues about car parks or toilet facilities managed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, please contact us at rachel.briggs@yorkshiredales.org.uk.
This video shows an overview of a Changing Places toilet, designed to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities. It highlights key features, including a manual wheelchair, a hoist, a toilet equipped with grab rails, and a height-adjustable changing bench.
